Trader & Mentor: Ross Butter
Why Boring Trading, Strong Mentorship, and Data-Driven Discipline Win
In this episode of Market Mamas, Becky sits down with Ross, a Scotland-based trader with six years of experience in the markets, to unpack what sustainable trading really looks like beyond the hype, shortcuts, and social media noise.
At just 25 years old, Ross brings a level of maturity that reflects years of disciplined study, strong mentorship, and a relentless commitment to understanding risk, probability, and psychology. Rather than chasing fast money, Ross’s journey emphasizes something far more powerful: longevity.
From Early Success to Hard Lessons
Ross began trading during the COVID years, initially drawn in like many retail traders: curious and motivated, but overwhelmed by conflicting information online. Early success came quickly, and just as quickly, it led to a painful drawdown. Instead of quitting, Ross used that experience as a turning point.
A key theme of the conversation centers on how early wins can be more dangerous than early losses. They often inflate ego and mask weaknesses in risk management. Ross shares how his own setbacks pushed him toward a deeper focus on statistics, probabilities, and data-backed decision-making tools that would ultimately stabilize his trading.
The Power of Mentorship and Ownership
Throughout the episode, Ross credits strong mentors for accelerating his growth, but he’s equally clear that no mentor can replace personal responsibility. Traders must understand their own data, their own probabilities, and their own psychology. Gosh, this is such a powerful point!
One of the most compelling takeaways is Ross’s belief that confidence doesn’t come from being told you’re doing the right thing. It comes from doing the work yourself. Without that foundation, doubt eventually creeps in during drawdowns, often leading traders to abandon otherwise viable systems.
“What matters is not the probability of being right, but the cost of being wrong.”

Why “Boring” Trading Is a Competitive Advantage
Ross and I repeatedly returned to a counterintuitive truth: boring trading gets paid.
Instead of chasing massive wins or overleveraging on “A+” setups, Ross focuses on:
Modest win rates (around 50%)
Consistent risk-to-reward
Strict, non-negotiable risk management
Psychological buffer zones that prevent emotional decision-making
This approach allows him to stay objective during losing streaks and adapt when market conditions change, without blowing up accounts or abandoning discipline.
One Market, One Focus
Another standout insight from the episode is Ross’s decision to trade a single market—copper—for over a year and a half. This deliberate focus allowed him to deeply understand how volume, structure, and market behavior evolved across different environments.
Rather than jumping between strategies and instruments, Ross argues that mastery comes from repetition, not variety. That level of familiarity ultimately helped him refine his timeframe selection, execution style, and personal strengths as a trader.
Trading Is a Long Game
Perhaps the most grounding message of the episode is this: meaningful progress takes time. Ross openly shares that it took nearly four years before he saw real traction, and that drawdowns, stagnation, and self-doubt were part of the process. Such a refreshing truth bomb honestly.
There are no shortcuts. The market eventually exposes weak habits, poor risk management, and unchecked ego. Those willing to learn, adapt, and commit to steady improvement are the ones who last.
