Trading From First Principles: A Conversation With Scott Allen

Some conversations just hit differently. The kind where you can feel someone has spent years in the trenches, stripping away noise, challenging assumptions, and rebuilding their trading from the ground up. That’s exactly what this week’s guest, Scott Allen (aka “The Goat Trader”), brought to the Market Mamas Podcast! Scott’s story isn’t about finding the magic indicator or “that one setup.” It’s about breaking trading back down to first principles, the things we can actually prove, measure, and rely on, and letting everything else fall away.

From Information Overload to Foundational Thinking

Like many of us, Scott started out drowning in charts, indicators, strategies, and opinions. But instead of memorizing more patterns or chasing new tools, he decided to rebuild from scratch.

His mantra? “Evidence outweighs opinion.”

He started studying the real mechanics of markets: auction theory, Wyckoff concepts, institutional behaviors, and academic research. But he didn’t stop there. He applied a scientific mindset:

  • What causes price to move?

  • Who are the players, and what are their real motivations?

  • What can be verified versus what is just narrative?

This led him to identify 29 first principles of trading, which he now uses as his lens for evaluating any strategy, idea, or setup. (He even hinted he’s building them into a “manifesto” so stay tuned!)

Aggression, Absorption, Acceptance: Scott’s 3 Drivers of Price

One of the gems in our conversation was how Scott breaks down price action into three simple components:

  1. Aggression: traders pushing price (often amplified by HFTs)

  2. Absorption: market makers taking the other side

  3. Acceptance: a temporary agreement on value (aka consolidation)

Instead of memorizing 135 candlestick patterns, he suggests asking: “What’s the story here? Who’s aggressive? Who’s absorbing? Who’s accepting?” It simplifies everything without losing depth.

Context Over Candlesticks

This part of the conversation hit home for me personally. Both Scott and I share the belief that traders evolve not by adding more, but by zooming out and tuning out the noise.

When you focus on:

  • broader market structure

  • trend, sentiment, and cycle

  • how price behaves around zones of interest

  • and the flow of momentum

…trading becomes less about memorization and more about understanding. As Scott put it beautifully: “Momentum is the only thing that pays you.” Structure helps you anticipate. But movement collects the dollars. Yes please!

“Know the story behind the candles, not the names of the patterns.”

Why Scott Loves Algo Trading (Even Though He’s a Better Discretionary Trader)

This was one of my favorite contradictions he shared. He knows he’ll never build an algo that outperforms his discretionary skill… but he still chooses to algo trade predominately. Why?

Because algos can do things humans can’t:

  • trade multiple indices around the world

  • operate 24/7

  • remove emotional bias

  • take dozens of opportunities while you sleep

In Scott’s eyes, discretionary traders may have better “edge,” but algos give better coverage. And when paired with strong risk and money management, that can compound powerfully. Such a great explanation that you are going to want to hear from him in the full episode linked above!

The Real Trader’s Work: Trade Management

Both of us agreed, anyone can learn entries. The real growth comes in mastering the exit.

Scott broke down why fixed-R profit targets often have the lowest expectancy, and why conditional exits (or context-based scaling) tend to outperform. His discretionary process is dynamic: lock in the impulse, give room for the pullback, trail based on new information, beyond the original thesis.

I love this because it reflects reality: no two trades flow exactly the same. You learn to manage trades by trading them. Replays, screenshots, notes, data. That’s where consistency comes from.

Expert Generalist Energy

One thing I admire about Scott is that he owns his need to understand everything: asset classes, timeframes, strategies, market structures. While many traders niche down, he leans into being an expert generalist, someone who sees the bigger web connecting all systems.

And honestly? For long-term traders, that adaptability might be the ultimate edge.
